How a Plug Valve Works and When to Use It

How it works
A cylindrical or tapered plug with a port through it sits in the valve body. When the port lines up with the pipe, fluid flows through. A quarter turn brings the solid part of the plug across the line and closes it.
Best for on-off and diverting
Plug valves are mainly used for on-off isolation and for routing flow with multi-port designs. To regulate flow, use a globe valve instead.
Other options
For large clean lines, a butterfly valve saves space and weight. For full-bore multi-turn isolation, a gate valve can be supplied.

What is the difference between sleeved and lubricated plug valves?
A sleeved plug valve has a PTFE sleeve between the plug and body, so it needs no lubricant. A lubricated plug valve uses a sealant injected between the plug and body, and is used for higher-pressure service.
