How a Butterfly Valve Works and When to Use It

How it works
A disc is mounted on a shaft inside the pipe. When the disc is turned parallel to the flow, fluid passes around it. A quarter turn puts the disc across the line and closes it.
Best for larger lines
The compact body saves space and weight as line size grows. For full-bore isolation with a straight flow path, a gate valve can be supplied instead.
Other options
For fine flow regulation, a globe valve gives closer control. To stop reverse flow, fit a swing check valve.

What is the difference between concentric, double offset and triple offset?
In a concentric valve the shaft sits at the disc centre and the seat is a resilient liner. Double offset and triple offset valves move the shaft away from the centre, and the triple offset type uses a metal seat for harder service.
Which seat or liner should I choose?
Options include EPDM, NBR, Viton, PTFE and metal-to-metal. The right one depends on your media and temperature, so please share both with your enquiry.
Can a Butterfly Valve be fitted with an actuator?
