How a Globe Valve Works and When to Use It

How it works
A disc is moved up and down by the stem, straight onto or away from a seat inside the body. The more the disc lifts, the more flow passes, which is what makes adjusting the flow possible.
Best used for regulation
A Globe Valve suits lines where flow has to be adjusted or shut off tightly. Its flow path is less direct than in a gate valve, so for plain full-bore isolation a gate valve is usually the better pick.
Other options
For quick quarter-turn shut-off, consider a ball valve. For larger lines where space and weight matter, a butterfly valve is often used.
