How a Ball Valve Works and When to Use It
A short guide from our side to help you decide whether a Ball Valve is the right choice for your line.
How it works
A ball with a hole through it sits between two seats. When the hole lines up with the pipe, fluid flows straight through. A quarter turn puts the solid side of the ball across the line and stops the flow.
Best used for on-off service
Ball valves are made to be fully open or fully closed. Holding them partly open can wear the seats. To regulate flow, use a globe valve instead.
Other options
For larger lines where space and weight matter, a butterfly valve is often used. To stop reverse flow, fit a swing check valve.

Do you make API Ball Valves?
Yes. We make API Ball Valves to design standards such as API 6D and API 608, and they are tested to API 598. Please mention the standard in your enquiry.
What is the difference between floating and trunnion mounted?
In a floating ball valve, line pressure pushes the ball against the seat. In a trunnion-mounted valve the ball is held by trunnions, which is why it is commonly used for larger sizes and higher pressures.
Which seat material should I choose?
Seat options include PTFE, R-PTFE, PEEK, Delrin and metal-to-metal. The right one depends on your media and temperature, so please share both with your enquiry.
