How a Gate Valve Works and When to Use It

How it works
A gate or wedge moves up and down at a right angle to the flow. Raised fully, it leaves the passage open; lowered, it seals against the seats and stops the flow.
Best used for isolation
A Gate Valve is meant to be fully open or fully closed. Leaving it partly open for long periods can wear the seats. If you need to regulate flow, a globe valve is the better fit.
Other options
For quick quarter-turn shut-off, consider a ball valve. For larger lines where space and weight matter, a butterfly valve is often used.

Can a Gate Valve be used to control flow?
It is not recommended. A Gate Valve is designed to be fully open or fully closed. For regulating flow, a globe valve is the right product.
